Consists of receipts for monies paid by Joseph and Sarah Spencer, primarily for activities surrounding the building and fixing of the family's dwelling. Entries mention products associated with the building trades and names of workers. Also included are receipts for taxes and bread. Although the volume's years span from 1786 to 1841, the book actually covers the periods from 1786 to the end of the century and 1826-1841.

Joseph and Sarah Spencer were Philadelphia, Pa. residents in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. City directories list a Joseph Spencer begining in 1817 and provide three descriptions of occupations: merchant, professor of languages at the Protestant Epsicopal Academy, and gentleman. It is not known whether the Joseph Spencer of this manuscript is either or any of the individuals whose occupations are recorded in the directories.
